This particular tragedy has been especially difficult to deal with. The sobering truth is that when weapons are kept in the house, they are most likely to be used against a member of that household, and often accidentally. If we learn nothing else from this horrible episode, I hope that we start rethinking this notion that somehow we are better off if we arm ourselves. In the heat of the moment, we are simply not as capable of defending ourselves using a weapon that requires calm, skill and concentration, as we like to think we would be. And in that moment, there's nothing to defend us against ourselves.

I think that having weapons in the house opens up the possibility of them being mishandled. For me, foreclosing that possibility means that no guns are around. For people who feel they *need* to have guns around, they do need to take the necessary precautions. I haven't seen or heard much discussion about how to handle weapons, even with this tragedy.
Right now, its like every person for themselves: some hope that nothing happens but don't do much to prevent it; some just think that if they keep it secret and they are the only ones who can fire a weapon, that they are in charge.
I prefer not to be around the weapons, so that means that people cannot bring them into my house or my space. I was at Christophers back in the summer, and I found myself pressed up against a guy in the crowd; he put out his hand to hold me away from him at the same time that I put my arm around him to get my balance. In doing so, I accidentally touched his gun in the small of his back. Minutes later, I left, because I felt more vulnerable than ever.
I really don't like being around men and guns because that's their first line of defense when anything troubles their masculinity. And when they have guns, they seem to act a lot more cocky and sure of themselves, as if daring anybody to trouble them. In any conflict, that kind of thing only makes the other one more pissed off. A recipe for disaster.
